Summer 2004

The president was too pre-occupied with wedding plans to conduct a July club meeting and honeymooned right thru the August meeting date. Go figure!

PLEASE ATTEND THE NEXT CLUB MEETING ON SEPT. 8th,8:00 PM AT FRANCO'S

Haddon Ave. in Westmont - west of Crystal Lake Ave.

CONGRATS BRANDON & SUE!

SJAC pres. Brandon Hamilton & member Sue Schwenderman began their new life together as husband & wife on Aug. 7th.

CONGRATS HELENE & BILL!

Aug 7th was a "marrying day" for SJAC as member Helene McGovern also began married life with her husband Bill Usher.

President's Corner

Well this marks the first musings from the SJAC president as a married man. Sue and I had a fantastic wedding on August 7th. It was great to see so many of you join us for our fun run and pancake breakfast on August 8th.
Now I am back from a wonderful honeymoon in the Caribbean, a little overweight, a little under trained and ready to start my fall marathon training.

SJAC currently has 137 members among our 107 individual and family memberships!

This summer the SJAC had a blast at the 4th of July parade in Haddonfield along with a post parade picnic at our house that even got extended into the next night after the Tuesday night no frills race. A big thank you goes to Jim Flanagan who dreamed up the parade theme and really pushed to organize us. We certainly know how to have a good time.

And not only that but our no frills races this year were a success with great turnouts and even some unexpected thrills like the pouring down rain at the handicap race, and the band that showed up for the final race of the year. Thanks Ken for pulling out all the stops!

Our membership numbers continue to grow and it's now commonplace to see our members featured in the Courier Post. It took awhile to get it rolling but I think we nailed it in the PR department. There were so many great stories about our members. (See Jeff Wolfe's running column every Monday - pg. 2 of the Courier-Post's sports section.)

But summer is winding down and the fall race schedule is heating up. Upcoming on the grand prix race circuit are the Parkway Run 5K on September 26th, the Delaware Distance Classic 5K, October 10th, the Radnor Run 5 Miler, October 31, the Ben Franklin Bridge Run 10K, November 7th and the Philadelphia marathon and Rothmann Institute 8K on November 21.

Fourty SJAC members turned out for the Haddonfield Independence Day Parade!

"NO FRILLS, JUST THRILLS" SERIES

The "Roadrunners" perform during the 1-2-3 Loop Races on Aug. 17th.

Not on the grand prix circuit but popular nonetheless on September 19th is the Distance Run followed by our annual post race party. Also plans are underway for the Grace Church 5K run on October 16th. We will be handling the timing and scoring and I hope you can come and support the run. It's shaping up to be a busy fall with lots of fun and hopefully some fast running. I will see you all at Franco's Place on September 8th for our monthly meeting.

See you on the roads,

Brandon Hamilton, President SJAC

For the 12th consecutive summer, SJAC conducted our "No Frills, Just Thrills" race series at Cooper River Park. The series kicked off with the One Loop race on June 8th. The 105 runners in this race set a new single race participant record for the series! Much thanks to Glenn Gess for bringing the busload of Haddonfield HS soccer players to this race!

A prediction Run on July 20th replaced the relay previously conducted at this point in the series and the 62 runners all had a great time. The series wrapped up with the traditional One, Two or Three Loop option on Aug. 17th with 82 runners participating.

NEW SJAC BANNER

It has been quite some time since the last "official" SJAC banner was rendered unusable in an incident with a can of olive oil. It was replaced this summer and is pictured above "resting" after a tough march in the Haddonfield Independence Day Parade.

Total participation for the six evenings of races was 409, an all time best for the series! There are too many "regulars" who come out to participate in this series to mention but we extend a special thainks to the Hawks of Haddon Twp. HS who have been regulars for many years. SJAC members Tom Osler and Norman Ostroff had "Perfect Attendance", running in events on all six evenings.

Also too numerous to mention are the SJAC members who turned out each evening of the series to work at one (or more) of the many jobs required to conduct this race series. Many thanks!

Mid-Atlantic USATF

Grand Prix & Club Challenge

After more than a two month break over the summer, the Mid-Atlantic USATF Gran Prix schedule resumed with the Stone Harbor Lions Club 10K on Aug. 29th. After five races in the 11 event/10 date series, SJAC leads the Club Challenge and many members are placed high in the individual Grand Prix standings. Most notable among these are Joy Hampton and Jim Flanagan who lead the women's and men's divisions.

There are currently 60 SJAC members who claim an SJAC affiliation in their Mid-Atlantic USATF membership and are therefore eligible to compete for SJAC in the Club Challenge. More details on USATF and the Grand Prix can be found at this link: Grand Prix - Club Challenge details
